Excerpt from Descendants of Jonathan Towle, 1747-1822, of Hampton and Pittsfield, N. H

In this volume no attempt has been made to trace out the descendants of Philip other than to give a short Sketch of his son Joseph, his grandson James, and his great-grandson Jonathan, the latter being the direct ancestor of all those genealogically treated herein.

From this point full account is taken of all descendants so far as known. Few can appreciate the amount of labor incident to collecting and piecing together so many names and records. The patience, energy, and persistence employed have been beyond measure.

Author Alvin Towle follows his family's lineage from Phillip Towle, the first Towle in America, who is a "seafaring man of mysterious origin," but with an Irish accent so thick the part of Hampton, New Hampshire he lived in in the 1650s was called Little Ireland. Here, Phillip's wife Isabella Austin was tried for witchcraft. The 1600s narrative jumps back to about 450 BC, before going to Jonathan Towle in Pittsfield, NH. There are many adventure stories--this is hardly a "dry" genealogy. The Towle family married English, and tended to have large families of about ten children. Towle's begat Towle's, and they went forth and multiplied, from Hampton to Pittsfield, NH, and into many Vermont and Maine towns and hamlets, before crossing the country. Those who found their way to California had a job waiting for them near San Francisco in a town called Towle, named for a millionaire in the family who made his money in the Gold Rush furnishing the pick and shovel brigades with supplies. The Towle family are related to many old American and Mayflower families, including Austin, Batchelder, Chase, Roby, Drake, Emerson, Knowlton, Brackett, Perkins, Chaffee, Flanders, Washburn, and many others.

This is a scanned copy with many typos. A facsimile of the 1903 edition is available as a goggle books download. But this one is still worth it for a bound copy.

A very complete and amazing work done during a time that didn't have the benefit of computers (1903). If you are related to Jonathan Towle, you must own this book.
