As she strips away the tradition and elitism, she uncovers a dark core which suggests that the death of the young woman may not have been an accident. Calling upon her friends to help with the investigation, Georgie inadvertently places them in great danger. Rejoin Georgie Connelly in this fourth novel of the series where anything could and usually does happen.

The characters of False Allegiance make the book a completely entertaining read. I think there’s maybe two characters who aren’t stubborn, volatile personalities. This results in a narrative that’s constantly popping, filled with emotional fireworks, as the characters argue with, and shout at, each other through sometimes dangerous moments. I know a lot of people like that; the constant bickering, recrimination and disagreement over everything — most spurred by the peppery Georgie — brings an air of almost comic reality to the story. The fact is, in real life, people ARE difficult, and E.L. captures it beautifully.I enjoyed the plot and the convoluted way Georgie got involved in investigating drug use and death at the upper crust fraternity and sorority. E.L. has a real talent for showing the messiness and uncertainty of life, giving her narrative a powerful ring of truth.
Fiery Georgie Connelly is one of the most memorable characters I’ve met, indie novel or otherwise. Her occasionally rough language, her refusal to bow to inhibitions, and her single-minded drive to do what’s right as she sees it, consequences be damned, make for vastly entertaining reading. While the novel could use a bit of editorial polish, it still roars along at a furious pace, just like Georgie, to a realistic conclusion, and what looks like number five in the Georgie Connelly saga.

False Allegiance The Georgie Connelly Stories edition by E L Lindley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Since the traumatic events of a month previously (A Righteous Path) Georgie is having difficulty shaking off the lethargy plaguing her. James is spending a lot of his time at the office and Danny is in the process of developing his own company and doing quite well. Georgie is feeling at a loss, without direction and in need of a project, something to get her up and back into the world.
Wanting desperately to escape the house her mother bought, and promptly left Georgie and James to sort out, she tries again to contact her friend and taxi driver, Melvyn.
Georgie has been calling Melvyn and leaving messages for a couple of weeks with no reply and is seriously worried. And with good cause as she soon discovers. Melvin’s lady friend, June, persuaded him she needed money for her sick mother’s specialist care. Now he has lost everything since he remortgaged his house to raise the funds for June. Not quite all is lost, though – Georgie is on the case, determined to find June and hopefully recover some of Melvyn’s money.
Although Georgie and James are living together I’m glad to see not a lot has changed in their world. There’s still plenty of unpredictability in their relationship although I might sense a slight mellowing in Georgie. She is still determined and hasn’t lost her tendency to act before fully assessing the possible outcome of a situation, personal or professional, but she’s as endearing as she is exasperating. Poor James, sometimes he’s not quite sure what hit him. When June shows up at Georgie’s office asking for help Georgie can’t refuse her, regardless of the mixed feelings she stirs up in those closest to her.
The subsequent investigation is fraught with danger, involving attempted murder, marital upset and rich college students whose fraternities and sororities control the campus. An excellent and believable plot plus a great cast of likeable and interesting characters combine to make this a very enjoyable and absorbing read. I like the addition of Martha Chapman and hope she features in future stories. The development of the other members of the cast and their situations is realistic, if sad on some counts. I had to laugh at Marilyn’s attempt at driving and her passengers’ reactions. Looking forward to the next instalment to see how certain situations are, hopefully, resolved.
If there is one word that sums up Georgie Connelly for me, it would be irrepressible. However, in False Allegiance, the fourth book in this series and certainly at the start Georgie is more subdued than usual because of what happened in the previous story. The relationships around her are changing with sadly those closest to Georgie and her partner James facing some challenges. Emotions are running high and Georgie doesn’t do subtle.
Georgie is at a loose end with no interesting projects on the go and everyone else embroiled in their own work or struggling to deal with other issues. As she tries to find something to focus on she catches up with Melvyn, her friendly taxi driver, who has been avoiding her and finds out that he has been ripped off by a girlfriend and when Georgie investigates further she starts to uncover the dirty secrets of the university campus. I enjoyed finding out about the fraternities and sororities having heard words like Alpha Zeta and Sigma Tau but with no real understanding of what they were. Sadly, getting accepted into one of these houses seems to be all about class, having money and being the right sort of person and there was me thinking that was a British thing.
Georgie is soon back to her usual tenacious self as she hunts down the truth in a story that involves drug taking and murder. The usual cast of well-formed characters is back with Georgie acting as the volatile catalyst in a plot that has the others struggling to catch up and as usual there is friction between her and James although at the same time some signs that she is mellowing into their relationship. Georgie’s mother, Marilyn, is back to stir things up again and with her comes great entertainment. I also relished Sean’s role in this story and the new character, Martha Chapman.
What I really enjoy about these stories is that as well as Ms Lindley telling a great tale she also does a very good job in moving everyone’s life on and it’s done so realistically you actually imagine these characters as a group of family and friends. Although you can read each book as a standalone if you read from the beginning of the series you see the development in the characters and I’d definitely recommend you do that. By the end of False Allegiance Georgie is back to her normal self with another project in her sights which no doubt all those around her will get involved in. I’m already looking forward to it and highly recommend this series.
